Bonnier Books U。K。 Hot Key Books provided the first three chapters of ‘The Stolen Heir’ via NetGalley as a sample of this upcoming release。 It is the first in Holly Black’s new YA duology and returns to the world of Elfhame。Some years have passed since the events of ‘The Queen of Nothing’ and this book focuses on the experiences of Suren （Wren）， the changeling queen， and Prince Oak， the heir to Elfhame。 The Prologue is set in the past as Wren’s changeling nature is first revealed and later she i Bonnier Books U。K。 Hot Key Books provided the first three chapters of ‘The Stolen Heir’ via NetGalley as a sample of this upcoming release。 It is the first in Holly Black’s new YA duology and returns to the world of Elfhame。Some years have passed since the events of ‘The Queen of Nothing’ and this book focuses on the experiences of Suren （Wren）， the changeling queen， and Prince Oak， the heir to Elfhame。 The Prologue is set in the past as Wren’s changeling nature is first revealed and later she is dumped back in the human world。 Chapters One and Two are set in the novel’s present and Chapter Three again returns to the past as Wren and Oak interact as children。 From there it is ‘to be continued’。I had read and enjoyed the Folk of the Air series three years ago yet as I started reading this sample I felt plopped down and was left wondering who was who and what was going on。 I wish that Holly Black and her editors would take a leaf from those SFF authors who provide lists of Dramatis Personae or some opening exposition to provide context for their current project。 While I felt a little lost at the outset I did have access to the previous trilogy and was able to reference ‘The Queen of Nothing’。 Yet I continue to feel that it was shortsighted to assume that all readers coming to ‘The Stolen Heir’ are going to have the familiarity that the author or keen fans have。 I feel that this is especially important if they are seeking to attract new readers。Due to this I am giving the sample 3 stars。 Still， I expect that I will eventually do a combined read/listen of the complete book based on my positive experience of the other Elfhame books。 。。。more

Holly Black does it again！ Ever since Cruel Prince I’ve been completely enamored by Elfhame and was so excited knowing she was writing a new duology set eight years after the Battle of the Serpent。 Let me just say this book did not disappoint， although we didn’t get any outright appearances of the High King and Queen of Elfhame， they were mentioned quite a bit and I have high hopes that we seem them in the next book。Also Oak and Wren？ Absolutely loved their dynamic， it’s a bit different than Jud Holly Black does it again！ Ever since Cruel Prince I’ve been completely enamored by Elfhame and was so excited knowing she was writing a new duology set eight years after the Battle of the Serpent。 Let me just say this book did not disappoint， although we didn’t get any outright appearances of the High King and Queen of Elfhame， they were mentioned quite a bit and I have high hopes that we seem them in the next book。Also Oak and Wren？ Absolutely loved their dynamic， it’s a bit different than Jude and Cardan and， in my opinion had lots more angst。 Wren is definitely up there with Jude being a total badass and she really grows into herself at the end （iykyk）。 Oak is just a perfect mix of all his family members but I really saw Locke， Madoc， and Cardan shine through the most in his character and personality。 （Honestly he’s a conniving little bitch and I don’t know how I feel about him， but god he sounds hot）Overall this book was a 5/5 and dare I say one of my favorites of the whole year， I absolutely love Black’s writing and she came through with another outstanding book， which is just the beginning of Wren and Oak’s adventures。 Totally excited to see what happens in the second-and last- of this series！ 。。。more

It definitely didn’t subvert my expectations but I have a lot of thoughts。First of all: Cardan's tail > Oak's hooves。 WTF ARE THOSE I WAS LOSING MY MIND THE TAIL NEVER BOTHERED ME LIKE THIS。This book was definitely entertaining， i wasn't bored， and I think the characters， plot， and world were well built and written。 That's why this is four stars。 Now， I think theres a lot of things that could have been done differently。I think Holly Black shouldn't have made this book so connected with the chara It definitely didn’t subvert my expectations but I have a lot of thoughts。First of all: Cardan's tail > Oak's hooves。 WTF ARE THOSE I WAS LOSING MY MIND THE TAIL NEVER BOTHERED ME LIKE THIS。This book was definitely entertaining， i wasn't bored， and I think the characters， plot， and world were well built and written。 That's why this is four stars。 Now， I think theres a lot of things that could have been done differently。I think Holly Black shouldn't have made this book so connected with the characters of the Cruel Prince series because she's just subjecting herself to constant comparison between the two。 This also led to me predicting a lot of what was going to happen， because it's clear that she was modeling the book after what everyone seemed to like out of The Cruel Prince series: （view spoiler）[ betrayals （hide spoiler）]。Additionally， I wish this book was dual POV， because this book is actually equally about both Oak and Wren。 Oak has his own motivations and he's equally as present during the book as Wren is and I think it would make it a lot more captivating。Last criticism: the romance。 I don't blame Holly Black for this one because I probably would have done the same thing but still。 （view spoiler）[ People hated the fact that there wasn't more romance in the Cruel Prince even though people on social media falsely advertised it as a romance centered book。 here， I think Holly black tried too hard for the romance， and it just didn't feel natural。 These two characters are meeting after so many years and they are basically in love after like a couple weeks together where there's a clear power dynamic？ （hide spoiler）]All that being said， reading this book reminded me of when I first started reading YA fantasy， cause it brought me back to the world。 I also didn't have to stress to much about the worldbuilding cause I already knew about it。 I feel like I criticized it too much to still make it four stars but the things I criticized were just passing thought on what would make the book better， not necessarily anything that sent me into a rage and made me want to quit。 Despite the predictability， I was still surprised and hooked at the end。 。。。more
